About Silicon Valley Gurdwara
Silicon Valley Gurdwara is a non-profit religious organization which is mainly run by volunteers serving the Sikh community in Santa Clara and central Silicon Valley. The idea began in August 2011 and it opened its doors in late January 2012 with only 8-10 members at the begining. We have rented the Community Hall of Machado Park for 1 year for very Sunday for 4 hours. Our service started around 10.30am and ended at around 2pm. With the growing demand for local residents, we have fundraised and are able to relocate to a more permanent venue. Currently we are serving over 500-600 members who attend Sunday services regularly. There is a full on free meal provided throughout the service. Typically, meals are prepared by volunteers at their homes.
There are lots of local Santa Clara, Sunnyvale Sikh or Punjabi residents who are newly immigrants either work at gas stations or other stores. Firstly, they do not have cars to drive 20 miles going to Fremont or San Jose Gurdwara. They want to attend services but do not have the means. Secondly, there are many elderly in and around this area who face the same problem.
This Gurdwara initiative is to help folks visit the holy temple by bringing it closer to them. In addition to providing hope and help to those who participate with us on a regular basis. We also extend service out into the community. With all the efforts to organize, plan, and fund, we have now found a permanent rental location that offers 24/7 services to our members. This Silicon Valley Gurdwara provides mentoring programs, youth programs such as language and music classes after Sunday services.
